Voor fans was Jennifer Lopez en Shakira’s Super Bowl 2020 halftime show een cultureel hoogtepunt in een jaar dat werd gekenmerkt door zowel politieke verdeeldheid als een pandemie.
Lopez had echter een heel andere kijk op de massaal gepubliceerde uitvoering – of dat deed ze tenminste in de dagen ervoor. In zijn Netflix-documentaire “Halftime” wordt de acteur en zanger getoond aan het repeteren met zijn muzikaal leider Kim Burse en lijkt hij zichtbaar gestrest door tijdgebrek.
“We hebben zes verdomde minuten”, zegt Lopez volgens Entertainment Weekly. “We hebben 30 seconden van een nummer, en als we een minuut nemen, dat is het, we hebben er nog vijf over. Maar er moeten wel bepaalde liedjes zijn die we zingen. We moeten onze zangmomenten hebben. Dit wordt geen verdomde dansrevue. We moeten onze boodschap zingen.
“Het is het slechtste idee ter wereld om twee mensen de Super Bowl te laten doen”, vervolgt ze. “Het was het slechtste idee ter wereld.”
Elders in “Halftime” houdt Lopez zich niet in door de logistiek van de show rechtstreeks met Shakira te plannen. “Als het een dubbele headliner zou zijn, hadden ze ons twintig minuten moeten geven”, zei ze. “Dat hadden ze verdomme moeten doen.”

Uiteindelijk duurde het optreden van Lopez en Shakira ongeveer 14 minuten. Ter vergelijking: Madonna in 2012 en Lady Gaga in 2017 hadden elk ongeveer 14 minuten om op te treden in de Super Bowl-show. De halftime show van dit jaar, met Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem en Kendrick Lamar, duurde bijna 14 minuten.
De manager van Lopez, Benny Medina, deelde de frustraties van zijn cliënt over de keuze van de NFL voor een co-headliner.
“Meestal heb je een headliner bij een Super Bowl. Die headliner bouwt een show op, en als ze ervoor kiezen om andere gasten te hebben, is dat hun keuze”, zei hij. Volgens EW was het een belediging om te zeggen dat je had twee Latinas nodig om het werk te doen dat een kunstenaar historisch heeft gedaan.”
Ondanks hun beperkte podiumtijd gaven Lopez en Shakira elk een oogverblindend optreden dat lovende kritieken kreeg en er zelfs in slaagde een subtiele politieke boodschap over te brengen. De Los Angeles Times prees de diva’s voor “het samensmelten van old-school razzle-dazzle met een actueel gevoel van Latijns-Amerikaanse trots”, terwijl Entertainment Weekly het “hard-hitting, politiek en ronduit elektrisch” noemde.
